What Does It Mean If My Zone Is Ready for Commitment?

4:40PM December 03, 2018

We can't wait to serve you all with the most reliable high-speed internet around! Pre-register now at http://bit.ly/HWConnectFiber_ so you don't miss out when your zone is connected.

We've promised to provide access to fiber internet to every one of our members before our project is complete! This means that during these five years everyone will be in different "steps to connection" - the third of which is "Commitment".

This is typically an exciting step for members as they finally get to sign a contract that ensures that their house won't be missed when we begin connecting homes in their area! During this step, contracts are sent via email to anyone pre-registered for service. If your zone is in "Commitment" but you haven't received your contract, be sure to call our office at 800-668-8413 and we will work to get your contract to you.

In "Commitment" there is finally a 'magic number' for sign-ups! We typically wait until a zone reaches 100% of its goal before we begin connecting homes in the area. This allows our crews to operate most efficiently, saving you money! It's important for zones in "Commitment" to encourage their neighbors and friends to sign their contracts so that their zone can reach their goal and then be moved to "Connections"!

Have more questions? Stay tuned over the next few weeks as we explain the remaining 'steps to connection' and if you aren't seeing your questions answered, send us a message or let us know below!

What Does It Mean If My Zone Is Being Designed?

4:37PM December 03, 2018

Every day we're moving closer connecting each one of our members! We wish we could connect everyone overnight, but a fiber-to-the-home internet system takes months and years of planning and building to complete. Pre-register now at http://bit.ly/HWConnectFiber_ so you don't miss out when your zone is connected!

We've promised to provide access to fiber internet to every one of our members! This means that during these five years everyone will be in different "steps to connection" as their zone moves closer to being connected. Over the next few weeks, we'll be explaining these steps in more depth. The second step to connection is "Design".

During the "Design" step, you'll first begin to see us in your area! We'll send out crews to walk our lines and be sure our poles prepared to have fiber added to them. In many instances, we'll do some tree trimming or replace the poles themselves. You'll be notified that we'll be in your area for these things via postcards. This step is also when our engineers begin planning how the fiber will be built out into an area which means they decide where they'll put distribution cabinets, splitters, and terminals.

After a zone is engineered, we being the last step of the design process! For this last step, we have our construction crews begin to build out the mainline fiber that will bring internet access to an area. To complete the mainline construction, splicing crews will come through and connect all the pieces of fiber together. This mainline construction process takes up to six months or more to complete and when it's done, the zone will be able to begin the next step: "Commitment".

There's no 'magic number' for sign-ups during the "design" step, so you won't see a percent to goal listed for your zone at this point at http://bit.ly/HWConnectZones . Instead, the important thing when your zone is being designed is for your zone to be higher on the list of zones in the 'design' step than any other zone. The number of people pre-registered in your zone determines how high up on the list your zone is! Being pre-registered will allow us to more easily contact you and the other members in your zone when it's time for contracts to be signed during the 'commitment' step and the more contracts that are signed, the sooner your zone will begin to be connected.

Have more questions? Stay tuned over the next few weeks as we explain the remaining 'steps to connection' and if you aren't seeing your questions answered, send us a message or let us know below!

What Does It Mean If My Zone Is Gathering Interest?

12:21PM November 19, 2018

As much as we'd love to connect everyone overnight, it's going to take much more than a few hours to build fiber internet out to every one of our members! The fiber system is being placed alongside existing electrical lines and our electrical system took us 80 years to build. In comparison, completing this build out in our projected five years really isn't such a long time! Pre-register now at http://bit.ly/HWConnectFiber_so you don't miss out.

We promise to provide access to fiber internet to every one of our members! But, this means that during these five years everyone will be in different "steps to connection" - the first of which is "Gathering Interest".

We have limited numbers of crews working for us, so when a crew completes the job they're on and are ready to begin designing another area of our system we pick the zone at the top of the list of "Gathering Interest" to design next. There's no 'magic number' for sign-ups at this point, so you won't see a percent to goal listed for your zone at this point. Instead, the important thing is for your zone to be higher on the list of zones in the 'gathering interest' step than any other zone.

Have more questions? Stay tuned over the next few weeks as we explain the other 'steps to connection' and if you aren't seeing your questions answered, send us a message or let us know below!

Know Your Net: Latency

12:49PM August 06, 2018

People often mistake latency and bandwidth because most of the time they are advertised as the same thing. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) often claim that they "have speeds up to 50Mbps!" but the truth is that 50Mbps really doesn't describe the speed at all, but instead describes the bandwidth or quantity of data their network can provide you at one time. Speed is actually linked more closely to a less-used word: latency.

Latency is the time required for a signal to travel from one computer to another computer on the network and back. In terms of internet service, latency usually means the time required for a signal to travel to the ISP's server and back. HomeWorks Connect is one of many ISPs. The lower the number of milliseconds (ms) the better. While you do want high-speed internet, high latency will actually result in longer wait times when information uploads to or downloads from the internet so low latency is better.

When comparing internet services, it's important to understand their latency as well as their bandwidth so you can fully understand the speed of their packages. To help compare latency of different services, each type of internet service can be thought of as a runner in a track meet. Each runner at a meet is only capable of running at its own pace and the more quickly they can run and the lower their time, the better. In the same way, each internet service is capable of delivering data at its own pace and the more quickly they do it, the lower their time, and the better it is for you!

Construction Update

8:16AM July 25, 2018

Confused about the construction status of your zone?

If you visit http://bit.ly/HWConnectFiber_, you will now see that the zones are color coded based on which step of fiber installation they are in. There is a handy key above the map that explains what each color and stage of construction means.

Based on the levels of interest shown, Phase 1 includes zones Divine, Eagle, Grand Ridge, Okemos, Oneida, Orange, and Route 66. If you're not sure which zone you fall into, input your address at http://bit.ly/HWConnectFiber_ to see and then follow along on the Updates page for frequent updates.

If your zone isn't in Phase 1, never fear! We're working on determining Phase 2 so every sign up in your zone will help add you to the list to be next. We thank you all for your patience as we work over the next five years to get our entire service territory connected to HomeWorks Connect!

What Is Internet Speed and Why Is It Important?

4:50PM July 20, 2018

One of the best analogies for internet speed is comparing it to water pressure: it's all about how long it takes to move an amount of volume. The internet is made up of electronic packets. A packet is simply a unit of data. Every computer that is hooked up to the internet transfers its information to other computers

using these packets. For comparison, these packets are like drops of water. Just as more water pressure will deliver more drops of water in a shorter time frame, a faster internet connection will deliver more of these packets in a shorter time frame. The number of packets transferred through a connection in a given amount of time is that connection's internet speed.

For example, you could technically wash your hair with water barely trickling out of the showerhead, but having enough pressure to quickly rinse the shampoo out makes all the difference. As far as internet speed goes, you could technically stream a video by watching one or two frames at a time and then waiting for it to buffer for a few minutes, but nobody wants to do that. A faster internet speed will make everything you do online a smoother experience.

Fiber Service Makes Progress

4:02PM May 03, 2018

April, 2018

HomeWorks Connect, our fiber-to-the-home high-speed internet service, is moving along in Phase 1.

We expect to build service to our first retail customers in September; meanwhile, we’ve had crews out engineering and inspecting our power lines to make sure they’re ready for the addition of fiber optic cable when construction starts in May.

Phase 1 includes building along the PT2, PT3, PT4, GE2, GE3, and GE4, OD1, and OD3 circuits (see map), in these townships: Woodland (Barry County); Eagle and Westphalia (Clinton County); Benton, Oneida, and Roxand (Eaton County); and Berlin, Danby, Ionia, Lyons, Odessa, Orange, Portland, Sebewa, and Sunfield (Ionia County).

Over the next several months, we’ll post updates here in Michigan Country Lines, as well as on our Facebook page and homeworks.org. Whether you’re in the Phase 1 area or not, you can join our waiting list at HomeWorksConnect.org – the information will help us determine where to go for Phase 2 and beyond.

Fiber Readiness Tip #1:  Make sure you have a portable email address. If your email goes through your current ISP, i.e., sbcglobal.net or similar, set up a new account with Google, Hotmail, or another no-cost service. Start moving your subscriptions and contact list over now to avoid a last-minute rush.

Fiber Readiness Tip #2:  Don’t sign any long-term agreements with your current carrier. Many services will try to lock you in with a slight discount, keeping you from taking advantage of fiber as soon as it’s available to you.

Fiber Readiness Tip #3: Tell your neighbors! Direct them to HomeWorksConnect.org to join our waiting list - no matter where you live, we'll be using member interest to help us determine where the next phase or two will take us.

Introducing HomeWorks Connect

4:01PM May 03, 2018

February, 2018

HomeWorks Connect is our new fiber-to-the-home service intended to benefit all of the 26,000 mid-Michigan homes and businesses served by the cooperative across 13 counties.

HomeWorks plans to install fiber optic cable along our electric system. This high-speed data line would serve two purposes: 1) creating a network of system data that will help maintain and strengthen our system against animals, storms and load growth, and 2) providing member-consumers with state-of-the-art high-speed internet service.

“Most of us don’t remember when co-ops were formed in the late 1930s. Farmers worked together because none of the big utilities would bring power lines to their homes and families,” says general manager Mark Kappler. “But our history is being repeated now with high-speed internet access. Just as electricity was essential to improving lives 80 years ago, high-speed internet is needed for education, economic development, and overall quality of life here.”

Phase 1 will extend to areas of Ionia, Eaton, and Clinton counties with plans to make the first service installations to members in September 2018. After the pilot is complete, service will be offered in phases to the surrounding areas as interest is generated and the infrastructure is built. Kappler estimates it will take about five years to complete after the first service installation.

Plans are to offer 50Mbps unlimited up and down service at prices starting at $54.95.

We are creating a waiting list for members who are interested, and a crowd-sourcing web page will be set up soon to allow direct sign-ups for service.

HomeWorks Connect service will be made available to all of the co-op's member-consumers before extending to non-members, but the general public is encouraged to show interest at the crowd-sourcing web page as well.

Board Approves First Phase of Fiber-to-the-Home

3:42PM April 26, 2018

November, 2017

As the first step in a very long process, your board of directors has approved moving forward with a fiber-to-the-home service that is intended to benefit all HomeWorks Tri-County Electric members.

We’ll be installing fiber optic cable along our electric system. This high-speed data line would serve two purposes:

1) Creating a network of system data that will help our engineers, dispatchers, and line crews maintain and strengthen our system against animals, storms, and load growth, and

2) Providing our members in rural mid-Michigan with state-of-the-art high-speed internet service.

“Most of us don’t remember when co-ops were formed in the late 1930s. Farmers worked together because none of the big utilities would bring power lines to their homes and families,” says general manager Mark Kappler. “But our history is being repeated now with high-speed internet access. “Just as electricity was essential to improving lives 80 years ago, high-speed internet is needed for education, economic development, and overall quality of life here.”

Kappler adds that overall success will be measured in three ways:

a) every member will have access to affordable, reliable high-speed internet;

b) a fiber network will not negatively affect electric reliability or service; and

c) fiber-to-the-home as an internet service will break even financially.

There are currently 60 electric co-ops across the U.S. building fiber networks, and another 200 or so are looking into it as we have been doing. Our due diligence included two member surveys and two feasibility studies. We also made several visits to Midwest Energy & Communications in Cassopolis, who started their own fiber business four years ago and are now well over half-way to completing their build-out.

Because building a 3,300 mile network is a big job, even using our existing poles, this is being planned as a phased approach which will likely take six years before we’ve built out to every location. The board of directors will review member acceptance and other factors before deciding to move forward in each of the planned five phases.

Members can get involved in planning each phase through an innovative crowd-sourcing process. We will set up a special website where interested members can vote for their area to be built out next by signing up for the service, and encourage their neighbors to sign up as well. The more people who sign up in an area, the faster they’ll get service. Sign-ups will be available online or via phone to our customer service team.

These details, and more, will be determined over the next few months and details will be announced as they’re available in early 2018.

This service is not regulated by the Michigan Public Service Commission.
